Yes. NeuXelec is free and open source, released under the
GNU General Public License v3. There is no licence to buy, no account to create and
no limit on the number of patients. The source is on
GitHub.
No. NeuXelec is a research tool. It is not a certified medical
device and must not be used as the sole basis for any clinical, diagnostic or treatment
decision. It does not replace the judgement of the clinician in charge.
No. Images, projects and coordinates stay on your machine; nothing is
uploaded anywhere. The only thing NeuXelec sends over the network is an anonymous
request for neuxelec.com/latest.json at launch, to see whether a newer
version exists. That request carries no version number, no identifier and no data about
you or your patients, and the application works normally offline.
Windows 10 or later, 64-bit. The installer carries everything it needs,
including the registration tools — no Python, no dependencies to install. The source can
be run on other systems, but only Windows is packaged and tested.
No. Every step — coregistration, reconstruction, labelling, export —
is done in the interface. There is no command line and no script to write.
Not to reconstruct electrodes. FreeSurfer (or FastSurfer) is what
produces the cortical surfaces and the parcellation, so you need it if you want the pial
surface in the 3D scene or an anatomical name for each contact. If you already have a
FreeSurfer subject folder, NeuXelec reads it directly.
NIfTI (.nii, .nii.gz), DICOM folders and
FreeSurfer volumes (.mgz). MRI, CT, PET, ictal and inter-ictal SPECT and
fMRI, several files at a time.
All the DIXI references ship with the application. You can also declare
your own — name, number of contacts, spacing, including unconnected contacts and variable
spacing — and it is saved for the next time.
Yes. Since version 1.2.1 a project stores the path of each image as it
was written and relative to the project file, with a fingerprint of the file. Carried
to another machine, another drive letter or another network share, it finds its data again
on its own. If a file has genuinely moved, NeuXelec looks for it nearby, and pointing at one
folder resolves everything else that moved with it.
TXT, CSV, TSV, JSON, Cartool ELS and iELVIS, in LPS or RAS, and a valid
BIDS folder carrying the anatomical label of every contact — in the patient's space or in
MNI152.
Yes. Exported images can be defaced on the way out: the face, the eyes,
the nose, the mouth and the ears are removed, the back of the skull is kept, and the brain
is never touched.
Inside the application: a guided tour runs on the first launch, and the
complete user guide is one key away (F1, or the left menu). It documents every
page, every right-click menu and every shortcut. A two-page overview of what NeuXelec does
is also available as a
PDF brochure.
